The GYPSY HOMBRES are not your usual tuxedo-clad trio, playing the standard repertoire from the latest movies or Gershwin songbook. While we certainly can do that - and more - we prefer to take a different route - a more artistic and esthetically satisfying approach. Founded by noted violinist Peter Hyrka, and specializing in the style of Django Rheinhart/Stephane Grapplelli, the HOMBRES have released 3 CD's (of which "Django Bells" was critically acclaimed by the New York Times, Downbeat magazine, and NPR, just to name a few.) Our repertoire varies; from arrangements of Chopin and Brahms, to South American folk tunes, to a host of exciting, original compositions. The instrumentation - violin, guitar, string bass (with extra personnel as needed)- make a very portable, affordable set-up: very little is required of space and electricity. Though our sound is very energetic, we certainly do not hgave a problem with volume, as bigger productions do. Indeed, being acoustic, often we are asked to perform the ceremony as well as reception.
